GDC 2026, Blender 5.1, and Unity 6.4
Two major engines shipped on the same day, and GDC 2026 put the fast-moving AI 3D pipeline on full display.
Two of the engines most of us ship on landed major updates on the same day, while the AI 3D crowd used GDC 2026 to show how quickly the asset pipeline is changing. Here is the week that mattered.
Blender 5.1 and Unity 6.4, same day
Blender 5.1 is a polish-heavy follow-up to the 5.0 jump, with more than 350 fixes plus new Geometry Nodes and Grease Pencil tools for the procedural and 2D crowds. Unity 6.4 is the more structural release: ECS now ships built into the editor instead of as an add-on, and DirectStorage streaming arrives for faster asset loading on modern hardware.
Unity also mapped out where its runtime is headed. The plan is to replace the aging Mono runtime with modern .NET, known as CoreCLR, targeting Unity 6.8. If you live in C#, that is the performance story to watch this year.
AI 3D at GDC 2026
Tripo Smart Mesh P1.0
Tripo shipped a native 3D diffusion model that generates clean, engine-ready meshes in seconds. Native 3D diffusion means the topology comes out usable instead of needing a heavy retopo pass, which is the part that usually kills AI-generated props.
Meshy Labs
Meshy used GDC to announce Meshy Labs, an AI-native gameplay incubator, alongside a $30M ARR milestone. A clear sign of how much money is now moving through generative 3D.
Substance 3D Painter 12.0
Adobe's texturing workhorse added Warp to Geometry decals and a reworked post-processing suite. Minor on paper, genuinely handy when you are placing decals on awkward surfaces.
World Creator 2026.3
The terrain tool added real-world elevation import, so you can pull actual geographic data straight into your landscapes.
That is the week. Reply and tell us what you are building.
