Engine super-week: Unreal 5.8, Unity 6.5, and Godot 4.7
The big three engines shipped within days. Unreal 5.8 goes out as the last major UE5 release and starts the UE6 countdown, while Unity 6.5 and Godot 4.7 hit milestones of their own.
Mid-June turned into an engine super-week. The three engines most of us actually ship on all put out major releases within days of each other, and Epic used the moment to start the clock on Unreal Engine 6.
Unreal Engine 5.8
The headline is Megalights going production-ready: hundreds of shadow-casting lights at a 60fps target. Alongside it:
- A new mesh-based terrain system for overhangs and floating islands.
- MetaHuman Collections for crowds, and Lumen Lite for faster global illumination.
- An experimental toon shader on Substrate, plus Dataflow's procedural assets reaching production-ready.
Epic also confirmed 5.8 is the last major UE5 release. New long-haul projects should plan around Unreal Engine 6, which Epic is building toward a merge of UE5 and UEFN around the Verse language.
Epic paired the release with Lore, an open-source version control system built for projects that mix code with large binary assets, the exact pain point game teams hit with Git.
Unity 6.5
Unity 6.5 shipped with a Profiler AI Assistant to help diagnose performance problems, and it deprecates the old Built-In Render Pipeline, nudging everyone onto the Scriptable Render Pipelines for good.
Godot 4.7
Godot 4.7 added HDR output for both 2D and 3D, along with new lights and shader previews. A meaningful visual-fidelity step for the open-source engine.
MetaHuman 5.8
MetaHuman 5.8 landed beside Unreal, adding a full-body Animator, an open-source RigLogic, and real-time crowds. Open-sourcing RigLogic is the big one for anyone building custom facial pipelines.
Also worth your time
On the AI side, Tripo's P1.0 native 3D diffusion is still worth a look if you generate game-ready props, with cleaner topology straight out of the box.
That is the engine super-week. Reply and tell us what you are shipping.
