Unreal Engine 5.8 shipped at State of Unreal 2026 as the final planned major release in the UE5 line. MegaLights is now production-ready, joined by a lightweight dynamic Lumen path tuned to hit 60 fps on lower-power hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2. It also adds experimental mesh-based terrain and a procedural vegetation editor for large open worlds, plus an experimental MCP server plugin that lets AI agents like Claude Code and Cursor drive the editor directly. It's the stable version to settle on while UE6 is still years out.
