ArmorPaint 1.0
The open-source texture painter leaves early access after eight years.
ArmorPaint, the open-source alternative to Substance Painter, reached 1.0 on September 3. It has been rewritten in C, and the developer says it now uses much less memory, so larger models and higher-resolution textures fit on the same hardware. New in 1.0: basic sculpting, UV editing, timeline playback for skinned characters, path and curve layers, a tilesheet plugin, and Neural Nodes for AI upscaling, turning photos into PBR materials (realistic surface textures) and text-to-image. It keeps the node-based material editor, texture baking and path-traced viewport. The source is free under the zlib license if you compile it yourself, and desktop binaries cost $19 with free updates. The iPad and Android editions are still experimental and sold separately.
